Staphylococcus Evaluations

Antibiotic Resistant Staphylococcus Evaluations

In recent weeks, Staphylococcus infections have spread throughout schools across the United States. These events in schools and health care organizations have brought to the forefront issues associated with the antibiotic resistant bacteria. Staphylococcus is an organism which occurs worldwide. Staphylococcus aureus, or Staph, has become drug-resistant to Penicillin-related antibiotics known as Methicillin–resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections, or MRSA. It can be found mainly on the skin and mucous membranes of humans, including the mouth, rectum, intestine, and the genitourinary and upper respiratory tracts.

Occupational Environmental Health Solutions, Inc. (OEHS) personnel have the technical expertise and sophisticated monitoring equipment necessary to evaluate buildings for the presence of Staphylococcus aureus. If identified, additional laboratory testing can determine if the bacterium is MRSA. This can be accomplished as a proactive approach, or subsequent to remedial cleaning activity. OEHS, Inc. utilizes the equipment and monitoring techniques which are employed on the space shuttle.

The species most commonly associated with human disease is Staphylococcus aureus. Most Staphylococcus species occur as opportunistic pathogens in humans causing a variety of diseases which include boils, impetigo, cellulites, abscesses, and septicemia. Staphylococcus aureus is the source of MRSA and is also the cause of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) and food poisoning. Transmission of the disease-causing organism may occur through either contact with a person who has an open wound or is a carrier, as well as through contact with contaminated objects. Spreading of Staphylococci through airborne exposure is vary rare.
